Somerville, MA Water Quality Report
Where Your Drinking Water Comes From
The City of Somerville purchases all of its water from the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority (MWRA). The water is delivered through seven MWRA master meters into the City’s distribution system. The City’s system consists of pipes, valves, hydrants and service lines, which deliver the water to homes, businesses, and other facilities for drinking and other uses such as fire protection. Somerville’s distribution system consists of approximately 125 miles of water mains ranging from four to twenty inches in diameter, much of which was installed in the late 1800s to early 1900s. To maintain the system, Somerville rehabilitates and replaces older unlined water mains.
How the MWRA Provides Safe Drinking Water
The Massachusetts Water Resource Authority maintains state-of-the-art treatment procedures and is committed to providing a reliable supply of water and to make sure your water is safe, fresh and tastes great. Redundant pipelines and tunnels allow inspection and maintenance of key facilities while ensuring uninterrupted service. The MWRA also continues to rehabilitate and replace pipelines throughout the distribution system to improve both reliability and water quality.
