Helping Others

Water For People is a non-profit organization that helps people in developing countries improve their quality of life by supporting the development of locally sustainable drinking water resources, sanitation facilities and health and hygiene education programs. Stonybrook is a proud partner of Water For People and donates five percent of its profits to this worthy cause.

Every day, more than 6,000 people on our planet die from water-related illnesses — nearly 2 million people each year — and most of them are young children. Uncollected garbage, overflowing latrines and non-functional residential and municipal drainage pipes plague poor people in urban areas. Children play in "latrine streams" filled with disease.

Preventable diseases like cholera, dysentery and hepatitis have become epidemics in the developing world and can be traced directly to inadequate water supplies and/or sanitation. Unsafe water and poor sanitation comprise one of the greatest humanitarian crises of our time.

Women are especially impacted by the lack of access to water and frequently travel many miles from their homes to collect water for their families, preventing them from engaging in more other activities like attending school or contributing to their family income.

The time and physical energy spent collecting water — and the poor health and short life expectancy caused by unsafe water and sanitation — limit the life opportunities and life expectancies of people in the developing world. Water-related diseases force families to focus on basic survival and prevent them from moving forward economically, locking them in an endless cycle of poverty.

Clean drinking water is a basic necessity that most of us are fortunate enough to be able take for granted. Stonybrook is dedicated to give people everywhere greater access to clean drinking water — from in local offices to villages around the world.
